GSWS Faculty Fellowships

With funding from the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences, each year the Program will award a fellowship for a tenure-stream faculty member from the Dietrich School. The fellowship provides for a faculty member to conduct research on a topic related to gender/sexuality studies (supported by a course release), to teach one course in the Program (with compensation to the home department), and to participate actively in the Program.

The fellowship supports the research mission of GSWS and also brings faculty members from other departments, especially early- and mid-career faculty members, into the core undergraduate or graduate curriculum of the Program.  Applicants will teach an advanced undergraduate or a graduate course in the program, depending on the needs of the Program, and will also receive a course release intended to support research. A faculty member can teach a GSWS course in one semester, and take the course release in the other semester, or she/he/they could do both in the same semester. Faculty Fellows are also expected to participate in the Program and may collaborate with the Program in organizing an event.

Interested faculty members should submit these materials to gsws@pitt.edu by Nov. 1, 2021, for the 2022-23 academic year:

  • A brief description of a research project related to GSWS that the Fellowship would support. This does not have to be a formal research proposal.
  • Titles and brief descriptions of an advanced undergraduate and a graduate course that the applicant would like to teach for GSWS. Applicants are welcome to consult with the Program Director about course ideas. Indicate if there are constraints on the semester when a course could be taught. Please note that courses should be firmly in the area of gender/sexuality/women’s studies and should not be discipline-based courses that would routinely be taught in one’s home department. The course must focus on interdisciplinary approaches to gender and/or sexuality and be of interest to students from a variety of backgrounds and interests. Program needs will affect whether the undergraduate or graduate course will be offered.
  • At least one set of OMETS with student comments, preferably from an advanced undergraduate course
  • A CV

Interested faculty members should discuss their applications with their department chairs before submission. Fellows will be appointed by the Dean, as recommended by the Program Director, after consultation with a selection committee.  Questions? Email Dr. Nancy Glazener at glazener@pitt.edu.
